The Fair Path

“I turned. Harrison was gone.”

“What was that?”

“Gone. Harrison was gone.”

“Oh, I see.”

“No, you don’t. You don’t see.”

“What?”

“I said you don’t see.  How can you? How can you understand?  You have no idea what it was like.”

“What it was like?”

“Turning and not seeing my son, where he sat just minutes before. Turning and seeing the grass, the emptiness, where he was just sitting. Seeing him . . . gone.”

The man, Deidre realized, wasn’t merely distracted. His face, his whole being, was visibly frightened.

“What if,” he whispered, “I told you Harrison didn’t wander off?”

Reminded me of Gandalf speaking to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli at the edge of Fangorn Forest in the The Two Towers.

Your narrative switches gears nicely from the description of the disappearance to the suddne and strange reveal that the man knows more that he seems to at first.

    Aloha,
